Sonos Arc Ultra Review: We Tested It in Our Showroom So You Don't Have To
The original Sonos Arc was already the easiest recommendation we made from our showroom floor. Then Sonos went and replaced it with the Arc Ultra — a soundbar that addresses the one thing audiophiles complained about: bass. After putting it through its paces across movies, music, and live demos with customers in Raipur, here is our unfiltered take.
What Is the Sonos Arc Ultra?
The Sonos Arc Ultra is Sonos's flagship single-unit soundbar, released in late 2024. It sits above the Sonos Arc and Sonos Ray in the lineup and is built for anyone serious about getting cinematic sound from a soundbar — without a separate subwoofer.
The headline feature is Sound Motion, a proprietary woofer technology that moves a diaphragm backward and forward rather than in the traditional pistonic motion. The result is significantly more low-end output from the same slim chassis. On paper: 14 drivers, 9 Class-D amplifiers, and full Dolby Atmos with height channels.
In India, the Arc Ultra is available as an authorized Sonos product through premium dealers.
Sound Quality — The Part That Actually Matters
Bass
This is where the Arc Ultra separates from its predecessor. The original Arc was praised for its soundstage and Atmos imaging but regularly criticised for thin bass without a Sub. The Arc Ultra's Sound Motion woofer closes that gap meaningfully.
In our demo room, playing the opening sequence of Dune: Part Two (the sand sequence), the sub-bass was present and physical in a way the original Arc never achieved standalone. Not Sub-equivalent, but genuinely satisfying for a ₹1 lakh soundbar without additional hardware.
Dolby Atmos Height Imaging
Sonos has always been excellent at height channel placement, and the Arc Ultra is no exception. Overhead effects — rain, helicopters, the creak of a collapsing structure — track accurately. The soundstage is wide enough that sitting off-centre doesn't collapse the image.
Dialogue Clarity
Speech Enhancement, Sonos's dialogue processing feature, is still the best in class. Indian content — including Hindi film dialogue and cricket commentary — comes through cleanly even at lower volumes.

Our verdict on upgrading: If you already own the original Arc and have a Sonos Sub, the Arc Ultra is not a compelling upgrade — the Sub already solves the bass gap. If you're buying fresh and want a standalone soundbar that holds its own without a subwoofer, the Arc Ultra is the smarter starting point.
Setup and Connectivity
Setup takes under 10 minutes via the Sonos app. The Arc Ultra connects via:
- HDMI eARC (primary — this is what you should use)
- Optical adapter (included, for TVs without eARC)
- Wi-Fi (for Sonos multi-room audio)
- Bluetooth is not available — this is a deliberate Sonos design decision and worth knowing before purchase Trueplay automatic room calibration runs from the Sonos app using your phone's microphone and takes about 2 minutes. The difference before and after Trueplay in a real living room is audible — not subtle.
One note for Indian buyers: the Arc Ultra works on both 220V and 110V, so there are no adapter concerns.
The Sonos Ecosystem Advantage
The Arc Ultra's real value multiplies if you already own or plan to build a Sonos system. It pairs natively with:
- Sonos Sub / Sub Mini — for those who want reference-level bass
- Sonos Era 100 / Era 300 — as rear surround speakers for a full 5.1 or 7.1.4 setup
- Sonos app — whole-home audio, room grouping, streaming from Spotify, Apple Music, Tidal, and more 8mm carries the complete Sonos ecosystem. If you're building a home theater around the Arc Ultra, #
Who Should Buy the Sonos Arc Ultra?
Buy it if:
- You want the best standalone soundbar under ₹1.5 lakh without needing a separate sub
- You're building or expanding a Sonos multi-room setup
- Your TV has HDMI eARC (any mid-to-flagship TV from 2019 onwards will have this)
- You watch a mix of streaming content, sports, and films
Skip it if:
- You already own the original Sonos Arc + Sonos Sub (the gap doesn't justify ₹1.1 lakh)
- You need Bluetooth for direct phone playback (the Arc Ultra doesn't support it)
- You're on a tighter budget — the # or a good 2.1 system delivers strong value at lower price points
Our Showroom Verdict
After weeks of demos, the Sonos Arc Ultra earns its price. The Sound Motion woofer is not marketing — it is abtangible improvement over the original Arc. The Dolby Atmos imaging remains class-leading for a single-unit soundbar. And the Sonos app ecosystem is still the most reliable streaming platform in this category. For most Indian living rooms — 12×14 ft to 16×20 ft — the Arc Ultra standalone is enough. In larger spaces or for those who want the last word in bass, pair it with the Sonos Sub.
